A Vocabulary Tip for Writers: Don’t Use Words You Don’t Know

Let me elaborate. Many writers like to turn to the thesaurus to find substitute words to not sound repetitive.

Fine. Great.

But only use words you have heard of and that fit the style of your piece. Don’t just look up synonyms for your words and replace your own vocabulary to sound more complex or more intelligent. It oftentimes sounds choppy and forced, and besides, if you haven’t heard of a word, your readers probably haven’t either.

Simple isn’t necessarily bad just as complex isn’t necessarily good.
